The Long Road
Taking on any martial art is long term challenge. It is important to remember that when you begin and several months into your training. There are some martial arts practitioners that have been training for decades. It is important to remember, prior to sparring, that you will get caught and submitted. One practice that helped me was after I tapped, I would request to go back into the same set up and explore ways to defend the submission. It is a humbling event to get submitted, but everyone has been there. Just tough out those first few months. With practice and patience, you will get better. One of my favorite components of jiu-jitsu is that while it mimics life in some ways, it totally differs in others. In many aspects of life, practice makes perfect, in jiu-jitsu, practice makes development and there is no end road… you can always improve.
